It's one speech after another in Any Given Sunday. Perhaps none better than Al Pacino's Peace with Inches and not since Mel Gibson on a horse with face paint have we seen such an epic monologue. If you've got the gusto, do the whole scene with a group of friends before a big moment in your life. Make sure to emphasize "We CLAW with our FINGER NAILS" , "THE SIX INCHES IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE", and "that's gonna make the FUCKING difference between WINNING AND LOSING. Between LIVING AND DYING!" ...You're going to have to be pretty drunk.
We've got it all here, which is why so much of it is relatable to life. There's the larger than life, young hotshot player relying on natural talent and ego.
There's the old school coach, at the sacrifice of everything else, trying to hang on to the last shred of his identity and self worth. Then a slew of characters reflective of NFL players: Cap, Julian, Shark and Kelly
The front office ownership of powerfully hot but corrupted by greed Cameron Diaz, and the seedy James Woods, whose treatment of players borders on criminal.
This movie is the best portrait of the NFL there has ever been. From insdie the huddle grit, to superstar parties, to front office realities, this movie has every element of the game. So how do we use it?
We chose the right speech and go with it. Just about any line will do in Pacino's Peace with Inches speech to end all speeches. But let's take a look at some others.
LT
LT delivers one of the better Athlete as Actor performances I've ever seen. None better is his moment here taking Jamie Foxx's Willie Beamen to school:
Live a life filled with prostitutes, coke, glory and football, then you can truly eductate like LT. This is a man speaking, not an actor reciting. Maybe if you're a Wall Street vet taking out a new broker, or any other veteran of a P-Diddy lifestyle confiding in a rookie, then you can snippet this monologue. "When a man looks back on his life he should be proud of all of it. Not just the years he spent in the pads and cleats." This is at its core, the truth. Wading through over dramatization and comedic resonance, like a tuning fork, moments like this capture the essence of existence.
DOC
Difference circumstances, similar tone and feel to James Woods' physician's exit.
In an epic, Jerry Maguire like quitting , drop this line: "I am not going to take responsibility for standing between them....Didn't you ever have a...dream?"
Of course, this is one half of the movie. The other half is the Jamie Foxx show. Like Ray Charles, he immerses himself into the role of professional athlete, swagger and talent alike. Shades of Michael Vick sans K-9 conviction with the charm of Ocho Cinco. It is all right here.
"I got this invisible juice and once I turn it on...I'm gone."
Quotes like this will get you laid, and hated. They will fly when you're high and die with you. Arrogance is always a misplaced attribute. I am not condoning the use of any of this...unless you're filthy at sports. Then take any part of this and make it your own. Then go make a music video.
